TIGR has been funded by the National Science Foundation to annotate the rice genome. This four year award began in January 2004. A summary of the project and its goals is listed below. As the project develops, we will expand our web pages to provide the community with more information on the deliverables and timelines for annotating the rice genome.
Rice is model species for the monocotyledonous plants and the cereals which are the greatest source of food for the world's population. While rice genome sequence is available through multiple sequencing projects, high quality, uniform annotation has not yet been generated. Without annotation, researchers will independently annotate regions of interest and be unable to efficiently data-mine the rice genome for relevant features.
The objectives of this project are to provide high quality annotation for the rice genome. We will refine and update the gene models for the est. 40,000-60,000 total rice genes, provide standardized annotation for each model, link each model to functional annotation including expression data, gene ontologies, and tagged lines.
We will provide a resource to extend the annotation in the rice genome to other plant species by providing comparative alignments to other plant species. We will provide training in bioinformatics to 60 plant scientists, leveraging our informatic efforts to a broader range of scientists. We will develop an agricultural genomics lecture and teaching module for educating local high school students and teachers on the significance of agricultural genomics.
Introduction to Rice Genome Research Program (RGP) at STAFF Institute in
The Rice Genome Research Program (RGP) is an integral part of the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) Genome Research Project. It is jointly coordinated by the National Institute of Agrobiological Sciences (NIAS), a government research institute under MAFF and the Society for Techno-innovation of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (STAFF), a semi-private research organization managed and supported by MAFF and a consortium of some twenty Japanese companies. The research is funded with yearly grants from MAFF and additional funds from the Japan Racing Association (JRA).
The program started in October 1991 and the first phase continued through 1997 resulting in the establishment of some of the basic tools of rice genome analysis. Reorganized into a national project in 1998, RGP now aims to completely sequence the entire rice genome and subsequently to pursue integrated goals in functional genomics, genome informatics and applied genomics. It is now the leading member of the International Rice Genome Sequencing Project (IRGSP), a consortium of ten countries sharing the sequencing of the 12 rice chromosomes.

中国科学院国家基因研究中心成立于1992年, 由中华人民共和国科学技术部、中国科学院、上海市人民政府共同支持建立。中心从1993年就开始以中国主要栽培品种籼稻广陆矮4号( oryza sativa ssp indica cv Guangluai 4)为水稻基因组研究品系,进行基因组研究,并先后取得了一系列学术成果。 1998年, 基因中心作为中国大陆的参与单位,加入由政府和其它公共资金支持的国际水稻粳稻(Oryza sativa ssp japonica)基因组测序计划(International Rice Genome Sequencing Project,IRGSP),承担了第四号染色体的精确测序任务。该项目在国家人类基因组南方研究中心和中科院遗传与发育生物学研究所等单位的协作下顺利完成。基因中心现有研究人员60名左右,其中博士研究生10名。研究部门由五部分组成:DNA测序组、物理图构建组、功能基因研究组、生物信息组和计算机系统组。目前,基因中心已向公共数据库递交了超过5千万碱基的水稻基因组DNA序列数据。今后基因中心将以水稻以及其他动植物和微生物基因组为研究方向,开展功能基因组研究。
